Task 1: Create a summary sheet of all skills we may need to use as lifeguards

The full summary sheet can be seen under the training sessions tab and is titled lifeguard skills summary sheet. I created this because our current deck books at the pool are outdated, do not use pool specific terms, and are annoying to flip through 300+ pages in order to find one quick thing. This will allow guards to not only have an updated pool specific guide, but also be able to easily find their skills and even view them from at home. Attached below is a screenshot of an example of one skill we summarized and explained how to do it.

Task 2: Creating videos explaining how to put in and take out lane lines at both pools

I decided to do this task after I saw in on the task list on Sharepoint for leadership and felt confident in my ability to create good videos. I created videos showing how to properly put in and take out lane lines at both pools. The goal of this is to educate guards and standardize the process of lane lines in order to prevent more issues occurring of shifts when the shift before did not properly put in or take out the lane lines.

We can upload these under the training sessions tab in humanity and send them out in GroupMe. We added the picture of the button to press to loosen the lane lines.

Task 3: Plan for additions to make DHS more guard friendly

  • Clock in- We are added the paycor kiosk website using an existing computer that is always running in the guard office and pinned the kiosk on Microsoft edge to save time for guards and Jeff by not having to submit and approve missed punches
  • Labeled lockers- We are added a sign on locker 667 where the first aid kit is stored so that way guards don’t have to always look for the locker with the first aid and added a sign on locker 665 where the binder is stored
  • First Aid log- We are going to put a binder with a first aid log in locker 665 since the existing binder only had PDRMA forms and no way to log smaller first aid incidents
  • Bodily fluid Cleanup- During the school year when we have room in the budget, we will get another one of the blue boxes we have at Mitchell to store bleach and get a labeled bucket and put it under the desk in the guard office to allow for proper cleanup of bodily fluids
  • Biohazard bin- during the school year when we have room in the budget, we will get a biohazard bin and place it under the desk in guard office to allow for proper disposal of bodily fluids
  • Clear rotation and walking patterns- We took the existing guard rotation guide and posted it on the wall so guards easily know where the rotation is and what it is
  • Extra supplies- During the school year, we will bring extra hip packs, seals, and whistles over from Deerspring and put them in locker 663 which we will label extra supplies in case guards forget their stuff

Related Meetings:

Jacob Suby Meeting 2; Creating online lifeguard skill sheet

I looked at the deck book and online lifeguarding manual, read through all scenarios that are likely to happen or be assessed at our pools, and with consultation from managers and LGI, I summarized each scenario with how we do it specifically at our pools with out pool specific terms.

Action items:

Next meeting, I am going to record lane line videos with help from other guards and edit the videos for my second task.

Jacob Suby Meeting 3; Making lane line videos

For this meeting, on Friday, during the canceled all staff meeting, I stayed with 3 other guards at Mitchell to record putting in and taking out lane lines at Mitchell. I then edited the videos on my breaks during the following shift. Then, for this meeting, I had guards help me record the videos at deer spring, and edited them here.

Action items:

Next meeting, we will meet at DHS to come up with ideas and decide what to do in order to make DHS more guard friendly.

Jacob Suby Meeting 4: Edit goal language/ improve communication of tasks and meetings

We tried to meet a DHS for this meeting, however we were unable to get into the pool, so we pivoted and took the time to reflect on our other tasks. Originally, we were not planning to include lane line videos into the mentorship and we pivoted the third task into resources at DHS, so after this change and some reflection, we realized that my tasks began to stray away from my original goal. We took this time to review this goal and edit it to encompass all 3 tasks, while also ensuring that the meeting notes properly describe each task.

Action items:

Next meeting, we will meet at DHS during a coho shift and compile a list of things I would like to improve safety wise and logistically at DHS for during the school year.

Jacob Suby Meeting 5: Making DHS more guard friendly

For this meeting we met at DHS and walked around and asked guards on what they believed would be a good addition to the DHS guarding experience. We made a plan of what we were going to do to improve it and completed all the parts we could today. We labeled lockers, added the kiosk, and posted the rotation in the guard office. I will complete the rest of the tasks during the school year when we have more available resources.

Information about the Goal

Jacob Suby arrived at their goal through a series of meetings and refinement. Learn how that process happened.

What should we improve?

The candidate chose items in the aquatics program and department to improve. Goals are broad targets that we will work towards. Every meeting and task done will be in service of that goal. Goals should be large enough to encompass many tasks. Goals may not be attainable. Goals are our guiding direction; our North Star.

Jacob Suby's brainstormed ideas:

Improve adherence to pool rules
Improve the ability for new guards to learn and understand the pools
Improve safety of patrons at the pool
Standardize procedures and tasks amongst guards
