Will Lambert: Educate staff on non-guarding emergencies/situations

Candidate: Will Lambert

Mentor: Elena Edgar

Details

I noticed in the pools there was a lack of knowledge of emergencies not directly related to guarding, like situations away from the water and environmental events. In our all-staff training when these events came up, the overall response was noticeably less strong as it typically is for guarding rescues.

I think we should start to incorporate more of these non-guarding situations in our training. If we increase the amount of exposure we have to these emergencies ahead of time, then everyone will feel more confident and ready to step in when these events arise. My goal is for the facility to become just as solid in these areas as we are in our guarding emergencies, to improve the safety of our facility as a whole.

During the all-staff training sessions which incorporated these situations the facility as a whole underperformed compared to the standards of our guarding emergencies.

Information about the Goal

Will Lambert arrived at their goal through a series of meetings and refinement. Learn how that process happened.

What should we improve?

The candidate chose items in the aquatics program and department to improve. Goals are broad targets that we will work towards. Every meeting and task done will be in service of that goal. Goals should be large enough to encompass many tasks. Goals may not be attainable. Goals are our guiding direction; our North Star.

Will Lambert's brainstormed ideas:

Promote more consistent vigilance in the chair: less boredom/distraction
Educate staff on non-guarding emergencies
Improve response from the office during rescue
