On May 28th I met with Lelia Barr to discuss my mentorship for this summer. I went into the meeting with a few ideas on how to improve efficiency among lifeguards, specifically new guards. I had proposed a possible task, a document which laid out expectations as a lifeguard which would be given to new guards at the start of the summer. While Lelia liked the idea of teaching new guards the expectations in the workplace, she proposed the idea that we could turn my document idea into a packet used during first year in-services. We also discussed creating a set list of requirements first years would need to meet to stop attending first year in-services. We decided that I, if possible, would lead a section of expectations each week in the form of a station during first year in-services. Then after a few weeks, we could give the guards a small quiz to test how much knowledge they retained. This would allow me to teach others using my document and have more experience practicing leadership. We made a list of possible sections in this document and split these sections into broad categories. These categories; Job expectations, Patrons, and saves/timmy’s. For each week we brainstormed possible points of discussion in each category and created a draft which I would later use to make my final draft. We as well came to the conclusion that the station would be interactive, with me asking questions and getting the guards as involved as possible. We finished the meeting with a plan which Lelia was then going to get approved by Jeff. I would make two documents, one would guide me in teaching first years the expectations as a lifeguard and the other would be a quiz at the end of my sessions.
