Body motion!

Undulate the body without moving the head too much for a strong fly kick.

The best way to teach FLY kick is by demonstrating it.

Testable goal:

Have someone demonstrate FLY kick to the participant and give them a chance to do it for a short distance.

Swimmer does not need to do it well, though will often be immediately able to do it once they see how its done.

Bonus Goals:

  • Fly kick on their own 5 body lengths.
  • Move the whole body, including the chest.
  • Feet should remain close together and moving at the same time in the same motion.

Activities to achieve this goal:

3 x SL w/ FLY K

Lock the thumb and squeeze the ears.

Move the hips and legs.

Challenge is to keep the head and arms in SL from waving up and down.

Drive the motion from the chest, rolling down through the belly, hip, and thighs snapping the knees.

Demonstrate it!

Do fly kick for your swimmers to see it.

Have them stand out of the water and next to you, or watching underwater.

Challenges to achieve this goal:

Challenges are like games but with less moving parts and quicker.

Challenge:
With NO push off the wall, in position 11 move your body like FLY K and get to the flags.
MUST use the whole body (like an inch worm)

3 Different Fly Kick Drill

Do the first 3 like the pictures (1 each). Last one do “correct”

First line is very flat, barely moving.

Second line is generally what fly kick should be

Last line is super exaggerated like dolphin dives from bottom, straight up to surface.

Final Test: Watch someone do FLY kick, then have an opportunity to do it a short distance.
