Candidate: Hope Mocogni

Details

This is the one we are leaning towards. Leila and I agreed that it would be beneficial to incorporate the escapes more regularly into training. Although we went over these strategies a couple of times last summer, they stood out to me as something that should be more commonly known amongst our employees. Yes, patron safety is a priority, but we cannot ensure the highest quality of patron safety without proper employee safety.

Related Tasks:

Create a lifeguard escapes step-by-step instruction manual for leadership.

Task evaluation:

Lifeguard Escapes

Since we haven’t frequently gone over lifeguard escapes, I wanted a way to regulate how leadership staff was teaching it. I did research on the Red Cross website and found videos for each type of escape. I then wrote down the 4 different types of escapes plus step-by-step instructions for each one. To make it available to all leadership I added it into Sharepoint.

Lead a lifeguard escape station at a rehire training.

Was the task completed: Yes

Task evaluation:

Although the season hasn’t technically started, we wanted to start implementing these escape methods as soon as we could. I attended the rehire training on 5/24 and ran my station. It went well and I had the lovely Elena to help me demonstrate. This was good confirmation that guards will be able to pick up on these escapes and use them effectively.

Related Meetings:

Hope Mocogni: Meeting 1

This meeting was over Facetime because I was still at school. We narrowed down the four goals to one and decided to go with the “implementing lifeguard escapes” goal. To start, we decided that I should research the different types of saves and then write out a step-by-step instruction sheet for each escape. This is important because everyone needs to be on the same page when teaching and learning these strategies.

Action items:

This meeting took place over Facetime because Hope was still away at school. We started to brainstorm a couple of potential goals.

I remembered that last summer we had briefly gone over lifeguard escapes to use when an active drowning patron is panicking/grabbing onto the approaching lifeguard. The goal that we are leaning towards is  implementing these practices more regularly into weekly trainings to ensure employee safety and in-water rescues.

  • Finish the research regarding the escapes.
  • Start the document with the step-by-step instructions.

Hope Mocogni: Meeting 2

I went over my in-progress escape instruction sheet with Leila. We also found corresponding videos for some of the methods.

Action items:

We went over a couple of different types of lifeguard escapes. I started a document with step-by-step instructions for each type of save. Additionally, since all of the training dates had been posted on Humanity, we looked ahead at possible trainings where I could teach these escape strategies. We want to have an escape station running during at least 2 rehire trainings.

Hope Mocogni: Meeting 3

Leila improved my document with the step-by-step instructions for the escapes. Since the training dates were posted on Humanity we went in and looked at the different days I could go in. We also talked about what would be the most effective way for me to implement these methods.

Action items:

I finalized the document with all the step-by-step instructions and found corresponding videos for each escape. Leila approved! We also finalized the 2 rehire trainings that will include an escape station: 5/20 and 5/24 at Derp.

The next step is to implement the escapes into training! We finalized two training sessions I could have a station at.

Hope Mocogni: Meeting 4

During this meeting I checked in with Jeff about my mentorship progress. We discussed how I needed to fix my overall goal by making it broader. I adjusted it to “Improve patron safety through employee training”. Then, I went in and adjusted my meetings and tasks so that they correctly fell under the new thesis statement! I identified my two tasks as creating the lifeguard escape step-by-step document for leadership and running my station at an inservice. Both of which are completed, I am now working on documenting them.

Action items:

GET IT DONE.

Hope Mocogni, Meeting 5

We got it done! I tweaked my final document and added QR codes to the videos.

Information about the Goal

Hope Mocogni arrived at their goal through a series of meetings and refinement. Learn how that process happened.

What should we improve?

The candidate chose items in the aquatics program and department to improve. Goals are broad targets that we will work towards. Every meeting and task done will be in service of that goal. Goals should be large enough to encompass many tasks. Goals may not be attainable. Goals are our guiding direction; our North Star.

Hope Mocogni's brainstormed ideas:

Hope Mocogni, Goal 1: Implement lifeguard escapes in order to ensure employee safety and in-water save efficiency.
Hope Mocogni, Goal 2: Have a required google form for employees to give feedback on weekly inservices/trainings.
Hope Mocogni, Goal 3: Create an effective form of communication between COHO staff and pool leadership.
Hope Mocogni, Goal 4: Create a uniform inventory log to streamline ordering processes in the future.

Goal Evaluation:

Hope has worked really hard the past few weeks in focusing on a way to keep our lifeguards more safe. From now on, we will be incorporating escapes in various trainings throughout the summer to make lifeguards more comfortable with what to do if these stressful situations arise during a rescue. Hope made a detailed guide on how to teach and preform each one that leadership staff is able to use as a guide during trainings. This is a project that Hope is really passionate about and I look forward to implementing this into our trainings and keeping our guards safe.
